My Sister Irene by Juanita Carr Rush

This is a short piece written by my mother about her sister, my Aunt Irene.  They came from a very large sharecropping family.  Mama Carr, my grandmother, had a total of 11 children, two of which died at a very young age, of the remaining nine, only one was a son, Paul Henry Carr.  I have written of him before as he died in WWII, and he is remembered as one of the many heroes of that global conflict.

My Aunt Irene, subject of my mother’s story

My sister Irene was fifteen years old when I was born. My mother was in her 40’s and had quite a rough time, both with the birth and for a few weeks afterward. As my two oldest sisters were already married and out of the home, it fell to Irene to assume primary responsibility for my care. I was the last of eleven children and the ninth daughter, so I guess my mother had run out of girls’ names or else was too ill to think about it. Anyway, Irene not only took care of me she also gave me my name. She has told me that I cried almost constantly the first two or three weeks of my life. I imagine that it was probably because I was not getting sufficient nourishment from Mama, but to a fifteen year old Continue reading “My Sister Irene by Juanita Carr Rush”

What I Did with My Hero Cards

Discúlpame, por favor... this will be of interest mainly to members of the Chief Curmudgeon’s extended family.

Many of us were recently gifted packets of “Hero Cards” that included Paul Henry Carr.  I requested two packets and this is now hanging on the wall of my office/man cave.

If’n y’all need ideas of what to do with them…

And so the decorating went.

USS Samuel B Roberts DE-413 in October 1944 before being lost in the Battle of Leyete Gulf

My cousin Nancy of WWND fame… WWND being What Would Nancy Do...  One of my brothers and I were on a backpacking trip and having a discussion about a hypothetical moral dilemma.  We were of differing opinions, but I resolved it to both our satisfactions by asking, “What would Nancy Milam do?”

Anyway, I wander…  Nancy had a box of VCRs related to the USS Carr and Paul Henry Carr.  Two subjects which the 3.141592 regular readers of my blog will know about.  I took her videos and digitized them.  After all, VCRs have gone the way of 8-track tape players.  “What,” I can hear the younger generations asking, “are 8-track tapes?”  Future generations may well find all our digital files are  unreadable  also.   Ultimately, you need the right technology to access them.

Anyway, I wander again… Once I had them digitized I uploaded them to YouTube and placed them in a playlist Continue reading “YouTube Playlists: USS Carr and Paul Henry Carr”

Letters from the Navy to relatives of Paul Henry Carr

I have written about my Uncle Paul, my mother’s brother, several times on this blog.  He is considered a war hero from WW II, and for 30 years or so there was a Navy missile frigate floating around the oceans with his name on the bow.

Below you will find two links to letters written to the family from the Navy.  The first is to my grandmother, who everyone knew as Mama Carr, from the Commander of the USS Samuel B. Roberts.  The second letter is from the Executive Officer to Paul’s wife Goldia.

I had always heard that the Captain of the ship had nominated Paul H. Carr for the Navy Cross, but this the first time I have seen it in print.  I believe the Navy’s reason for not awarding it was that there needed to have been more witnesses…

A Lighter Side of Alzheimer’s???

Alzheimer’s is a horrible disease.  That one sentence by itself could be a blog article.  Alzheimer’s robs a person of the possibility of living life fully, in many cases joyfully, and frequently with dignity. Alzheimer’s robs the family of the person they knew and loved. It is a horrible way to fade out of this existence. It is a horrible disease to watch a loved one go through.

However, Alzheimer’s can have its lighter side, and perhaps something you might very loosely term a “silver lining”.  In another blog article, Hanging from the back bumper, I accused Saturday Night Live of modeling their character The Church Lady after my mother.  Obviously a bit of hyperbole, Continue reading “A Lighter Side of Alzheimer’s???”

Help Support The Carr Exhibit with Amazon Smile

Paul Henry Carr was my mother’s brother who fought and lost his life in WW II.  While losing his life he performed heroically.  He received several honors posthumously, included having a missile frigate name after him.  After 30 years of service the ship has be decommissioned,  but the memory lives on in our family.

This November 3rd, 2018, Paul Henry Carr is to be inducted into the Oklahoma Military Hall of Fame.  The family is looking on this as a huge honor, as it is.

The family commissioned an exhibit that is at Checotah, Oklahoma. Checoath is more or less the ancestral pueblo. There is an ongoing effort to complete the funding.
