The Year I Almost Went to The Masters – A repost

I just finished watching what is one of my favorite golf tournaments, The Masters.  I bounce back and forth between this tournament and the Open (British Open), usually played in Scotland.   I thought it a good time to repost this article.

When I moved back to Oklahoma from Rhode Island I went to work for Coburn Optical.  Their main line of business is the manufacturing of the machines that other companies use to modify lenses to mount in eye glasses.  They also have a division that takes orders to modify and mount lenses.  I was young, still working on my education, and my work experience had been in restaurants, factories and warehouses.  I was a warehouse man there.  I worked there from 1973 to 1976, leaving to move to Oklahoma City to pursue my educational goals.

My father had left his position with Kaman Aerospace and moved back to Muskogee, OK where my mother had been living for a while.  Looking around for a job he found one with Coburn and started there shortly after I left.  He moved up rapidly and after a while was managing the division that prepared lenses for other companies.  Part of his responsibilities involved making Continue reading “The Year I Almost Went to The Masters – A repost”

A riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma

A friend made the following comment to me:

“For years I have tried to decipher humanity and figure out if we suffer the Arrogance of Ignorance, or the Ignorance of Arrogance.”

That comment was followed up by a very polemic comment about the current political situation in these here United States of America.  Although I do not know why, since I am way beyond worrying about hurting the feelings of tRump supporters, I am refraining from adding it to to this post.

His poser is a conundrum that I do not have an answer to.

Quote of the Day – Walt Whitman

Quote of the Day… not actually daily, but whenever I encounter one I think worth sharing and there are not too many in sequence.  I like quotes as they frequently distill a piece of wisdom into a brief passage, or make other points very succinctly – such as the witticisms of Oscar Wilde.

“If you want to know where your heart is, look to where your mind goes when it wanders.”  ~~ Walt Whitman

A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again.

From Dr. Strangelove… Slim Pickens riding the bomb down

The caption of this post is the latest insane quote from our so called POTUS.

A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again.~~ Donald J. Trump

It sounds like he is threatening to wipe out a whole country. For what? They did not bow down to his royal ass? Of course, this is referring to Iran and oil shipments. The problem with tRump and his malAdministration is that none of them are chess players, they are not even checker players.  They cannot see the global chess board one move in front of them.  How else could they start an immoral, unneeded war that was urged on by the madman in Israel, and the power hungry, greedy leader of Saudi Arabia?

Might does not make right.

Truth is I really do not know what to say.  This is beyond comprehension. This is not the country that I have loved and been proud of for most of my life. Not by a long shot.  This cluster f*** is even worse than I could have imagined. I would have never envisioned the United States as a terrorist country, but we are fast becoming one.

For a more nuance and scholarly take on the the catastrophe that is dangling over us like the Sword of Damocles go to Paul Krugman’s video for today:  Our Darkest Hour (read the transcript – it is quicker and easier)

What has the MAGA mob gotten us into.  May Huitzilopochtli save us all.

Quote of the Day – Donald J. Trump, Another Day, More Threatened War Crimes

Quote of the Day… not actually daily, but whenever I encounter one I think worth sharing and there are not too many in sequence.  I like quotes as they frequently distill a piece of wisdom into a brief passage, or make other points very succinctly – such as the witticisms of Oscar Wilde.

Tuesday will be power plant day and bridge day, all wrapped up in one in Iran. There will be nothing like it. Open the fuckin strait, you crazy bastards, or you’ll be living in hell. Just watch. Praise be to Allah. ~~ Donald J. Trump

Targeting civilian targets like power plants and bridges are war crimes under international law.  Obviously, this man has never heard the poker maxim about not drawing to an inside straight.  At last count his sycophant, Pete Hegseth, has fired 20 generals who were trying to put some brakes on this madness.

Still happy with your vote for this madman, may Allah save your soul.

For a little more nuance on the quote (verified from several sources), here is Krugman’s article: Living in Hell… read the transcript rather than watch the video.

Quote of the Day – Donald J. Trump, Another Day, Another Faux Pas

Quote of the Day… not actually daily, but whenever I encounter one I think worth sharing and there are not too many in sequence.  I like quotes as they frequently distill a piece of wisdom into a brief passage, or make other points very succinctly – such as the witticisms of Oscar Wilde.

We’re fighting wars. We can’t take care of day care. ~~ Donald J. Trump

To put this quote in context, here is his remarks before he said that revealing gem.

I said to Russell (Office of Management and Budget Director), ‘Don’t send any money for day care,’ because the United States can’t take care of day care. That has to be up to a state,” Trump said. “We can’t take care of day care. We’re a big country. We have 50 states. We have all these other people.

Here is the CNN article I lifted the quote from: ‘We’re fighting wars. We can’t take care of day care’: Trump’s ill-timed rant

We are not taxing the ultra rich so El Pendejo can fight an unnecessary, unjustified, and IMHO, immoral war that we, the middle class are paying for, instead of funding day care?  WTF!  For my money that quote tells you all you need to know about Cadet Bone Spur and the Nazi Republican Party… no bread for babies, but billions to bomb innocent people. Again WTF!

May Allah save us all.

Cahokia Mounds – Another Great Site Close to St. Louis

This historical site is 45 minutes or so from our house in Chesterfield.  I have been there once, on a very cold day so we did not walk around a lot.  There is also a great museum associated with the site that you can spend an hour or two going through.

At one time this was the largest city in the Americas, north of the valley of Mexico.  I would like to go back sometime when the weather is nice.

Being a little picky… they talked about possible reasons for the decline of the city, starting in 1250 CE. One reason given was conflict with other indigenous tribes.  They then showed a picture of Native American warriors on horseback.  Horses were introduced to the Americas with the coming of the Europeans in the 15th and 16th century.  One of the reasons sometimes cited as to why the Americas lagged behind Europe and Asia in “development” was the lack of animals that were useful for transportation and work, such as horses.  Somehow buffalo and llamas did not quite have the – ahem — horsepower of equines or oxen.

Daniel Boone’s Mansion built in 1817

I have more than a little interest in this historic house as Daniel Boone‘s sister, Hannah, was my great (6x) grandmother, making him my great (6x) uncle (my father’s side of the family).

Plus the house is 20 or 30 minutes from our house in a small , country town called Defiance, MO. We’ve been there several times, generally when we have out-of-town guests.

Here is a short article of Daniel Boone trivia I put out a while back: Daniel Boone Trivia

And for your contemplation, did you know that Daniel Boone is buried in two places, here in Missouri just outside of Defiance and in Frankfort, KY. For an explanation checkout: On 200th anniversary of Daniel Boone’s death, two cemeteries still claim his remains

And another point of view on his burial place: Burial Place of Daniel Boone

Enjoy the video.  If you are in the area, it is worth a visit.
