yeah I know you did not ask!

You should so be blessed – well cursed at times actually – with a mind such as mine, making all these weird connections between my rumored neurons. Just be thankful that I do not share all of my random thoughts.

I have decided that I am a Zen Buddhist.  Proof you say.  Okay, here it is.  I have developed the following koan.

Which is louder? The rantings  of an old man scribbling on a lost-in-cyberspace blog or the sound of one hand clapping?

Snowflake Globe Meditation

snow-globe-239988_640I was listening to Krista Tippett’s show, On Being, on NPR this Sunday morning. It is also available as a podcast.   Krista was interviewing Simone Campbell of Nuns on the Bus fame. Ms. Campbell is a nun, a lawyer and a lobbyist for social issues.   She also practices Zen.

She had the most wonderful description of mediation. She described life as being like one of those globes with all the snowflakes in them. In our lives, most of the time, the snowflakes are swirling around pell-mell. Meditation allows the snowflakes to settle and be quite for a few minutes.

The Garbage Man

Many moons ago when I lived in Ft. Smith, AR I went out to the golf course to play a round.  At Ben Geren if you do this they tend to group singles together.  This works out nicely for several reasons.  It keeps the pace of play better.  You can get more folks on the golf course.  Singles are not frustrated waiting on foursomes.  It also has the added benefit of allowing you to play with folks with which you might not otherwise share a round of golf. 

On this particular day they paired me with a young man, a twenty something.  He was obviously working class.  I put myself in that category, but white collar.  Continue reading “The Garbage Man”
