$40 A$$

I use Yahoo as my web portal, partly out of habit, but mainly because I like their financial section.  I follow the market and my investments there.  The news section on the other hand leaves a lot to be desired.  Oh it touches all the key stories of the day, but then I have to wade through the celebrity gossip, the reality show buzz, and other such nonsense.  What really tears me up is that sometimes I find myself reading that garbage.

The other day for some reason still unclear to me,  an article on 10 styles of jeans trending currently caught my attention.  What really made my eyes pop were the prices.  The cheapest pair was maybe $60, most were over $100, and a couple pair were north of two bills.  Somewhere in the back of my mind, I still think a good pair of Levi’s should cost $20.  Of course, they don’t, but if I have to pay much over $30 or $35 for a pair of jeans I am not a happy camper.

The overpriced jeans reminded me of an incidence with my now grown daughter when she was in 5th or 6th grade.  This would have been around 1979 or 1980. That year we made the leap and bumped her up to Levi’s from Wranglers.  She was after all a little older now, and young women are very into fashion.  Given our budget at the time we thought this a generous move on our part. Banks, Breasts, Bamboozled

I quit Bank of America a while back as I decided I did not want to do business with them.  I have major problems with their business practices.  So I switched to Regions.  Now they have started charging customers for the use debit cards.  I decided to quit them and open up an account with the company credit union.  Dollars are votes after all.

To effectuate the change I went to the credit union branch just across from my office.  The branch manager is a young woman of maybe 30 years.  She invites me into her office to do the necessaries involved in opening up a new account.  She was an attractive enough young lady, but no knock out.  She was however wearing a top with a very low scoop neck and some sort of brassiere that barely covered her nipples.  I personally do not find this appropriate business wear, but maybe that is just me.  Just sitting talking to her I was getting an eyeful even though part of me was trying not to look.  She was seated at a rather large desk. Every time she leaned forward to have me sign Continue reading “Banks, Breasts, Bamboozled”

Controversial Photo Spread Glamorizes Domestic Abuse?

I probably have a different view than most as my ex was director of a battered woman’s shelter for several years.  After that she worked troubled teens who often were the target of domestic violence.  That is when I first realized that men can be and frequently are pigs when it comes to relating to women.  That is in good measure why I do not find these things even vaguely humorous.   We all need to be treating each other with love and respect.  Can you imagine what sort of world that would be… to paraphrase Lennon.

Busted…

I have a confession — I love women.   I love them tall.  I love them short.  I love them skinny, and I love them plump. Red heads, brunettes, blondes, short hair, long hair, curly or straight, I love them all.  They can have milky white skin or deep rich mocha, I just love them. Curves, no curves, it matters not.  A young woman, or not so young, they all fascinate me.  I do confess I just love women.

Perhaps the previous ramble is objectifying women.  Truth is I also love the company of women.  I am always amazed that such beautiful, wondrous creatures would have anything to do with the uncouth, self-centered animals that are males.  It does make the world go round, nevertheless. One thing I have figured from years of watching men watch women and listening to men talk about women, we men are pigs. Women watch men also, but they generally have the good graces to be discreet about it.

That is my preamble for what happened the other day as I was shopping in JCPenney.   I was about to enter a main aisle in the men’s department.  Two women stroll by.  They are obviously mother and daughter.  Continue reading “Busted…”

Bigotry – Confront or Ignore?

What does one do when confronted with bigotry/ignorance?  I have a black friend that when he talks about bigots prefers to refer to them as ignorant people.  I think he is right.  Bigotry is frequently due to ignorance.  I do know that this is not always the case, but I prefer to think that most folks just need a little education.  I also believe that it is not a good thing to let such attitudes go unchallenged.  To do so is to perpetuate the ignorance.

Several years ago I took a job in the Deep South.  I had previously been living in the Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Texas triangle.  There were several things that shocked or bothered me when I first moved south.  One of the primary ones was the use of the “N” word.  Continue reading “Bigotry – Confront or Ignore?”

Feedback Requested

See the picture below.  This was sent to me by a person I care about.  I thought the picture was misogynist and promoted violence towards women.  I pointed this out to him. The sender took umbrage at this.

What do you think?  Is it an appropriate picture?  And just for grins and giggles if you do respond indicate your gender.  And please keep your discourse civil as I said it is from someone I care about.  Either he is off base or I am.

Then later on I passed Continue reading “Feedback Requested”

This Land is Your Land

Woody Guthrie wrote this song in 1940 during the Great Depression and Dust Bowl days.  In this day of union busting, growing wealth gap, and some say outright class warfare, maybe we need to be reminded of Woody’s words.  This is land is for all of us, just not a few, and certainly not the corporations that seem to have hijacked our government.

By the way, the gal in the middle of the 3 women singing back up is Moncia Taylor who I do a website for…check it it out.

Step Away from the Counter

When I was in college I clerked in a liquor store for a while.  It was a great job for a student. On weekends we worked hard, but during the week the store was not busy and I was able to study hard.

I had a legal responsibility to not sell alcohol to people that were intoxicated.  Not only did I face criminal action, but as it was explained to me I could also face civil liabilities.  It is not always easy to tell if someone was over the limit.  It is almost always an argument when you refuse to sell to them, but I did do so a few times.  Continue reading “Step Away from the Counter”

Another Question of Etiquette

Speaking of tastelessness (mine), I have another etiquette question.

I was at a function the other night that mostly outside, bar-b-queue, cold beer, music.  It was in association with a local club on Ferris Street in Jackson, Mississippi (I just love spelling that word out).  There were more than a few scantily dressed young women with required tops that revealed most, but not all of their bosoms.  Oh hell, tits.

At one point when I was at the bar trying to get some chips, well beer, there was one set particular close and distracting.

My question of etiquette is this.  Would it be wrong on my part to look her in the eye and say, “Dang, I wish I had some beads”?

Paradise Now

paradise-nowI had read or heard about this Arabic language movie, and I was very interested so I bought a copy.  Just as an aside, I told a coworker and friend that I had purchased the film.  He is Egyptian and the movie had a special interest for him.  We made a night of it, his wife and mother prepared a traditional Egyptian dinner and we watched the movie with his wife and his parents.  He sent the kids to their rooms, although now I do not believe that to have been necessary.

It is a story about two friends in Palestine that decide to become suicide bombers.  Continue reading “Paradise Now”
