I Did Not Realize I Was So Angry
The other day, a few days before the Missouri primary, I stayed home to do honey-dos around the old hacienda, mostly yard work. I had stepped inside for a moment, and then I went back outside through the garage, out to the front of our house. As I did so a middle-aged, somewhat matronly woman was walking down our front sidewalk away from our front door.
I saw a stack of red flyers in her hand, so I asked, “Are you canvassing for a Republican?”
She nodded yes.
That is when the demons took hold of me and I went on a bit of a rant.
“Just so you know, I would never, ever vote for a Republican. Bat Sh** Crazy, Texas Republican Party Platform
A prominent historian, Heather Cox Richardson, puts out a daily newsletter, Letters from America, described as ” A newsletter about the history behind today’s politics.”
She had multiple themes today, much it about the January 6 hearings going in our national’s capital. A couple things really caught my attention, one was a quote from a very conservative federal judge that he uttered during an NPR interview:
“[T]he former president and his party are today a clear and present danger for American democracy,” Luttig reiterated to NPR’s All Things Considered.

The Sin of Simony
Years ago I read Dante’s Divine Comedy. I cannot say I got much out of it, but I did get through the poem, mostly because I can be a little obsessive at times. I had put a task before me, and by George I was going to complete it. Most of what I remember from the poem are some very graphic images from the nine levels of Inferno, and almost nothing of Purgatorio and Paradiso. Republican Platform
I just read (maybe reread) H. G. Wells, The First Men in the Moon. I sometimes think that in a previous life I must have lived either either Great Britain or Russia during the 1800s. For some reason that literature talks to me. Anyhoo…
The narrator, the companion of the scientist protagonist of Well’s novel, finding themselves in a pickle on the moon, delivers the following commentary:
“It’s this accursed science,” I cried. “It’s the very Devil. The mediæval priests and persecutors were right and the Moderns are all wrong. You tamper with it—and it offers you gifts. And directly you take them it knocks you to pieces in some unexpected way. Old passions and new weapons—now it upsets your religion, now it upsets your social ideas, now it whirls you off to desolation and misery!”
As I read that it dawned on me that the Republican Party must have lifted that line verbatim to put into their party’s platform.
