Quote of the Day – William Faulkner

With what is transpiring in Israel, this quote seemed very apropos.  Two peoples, both feeling they have legitimate claims to sole ownership of the same piece of terra firma. One through living there for millennium, the other through Biblical scripture.  Three religions seeing this small piece of land as holy, and all only accommodating the other religions through necessity. If there is a solution, it has been beyond our best political minds.

“The past is never dead. It’s not even past.” ~~William Faulkner

“Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” ~~ Leo Tolstoy opening line of   Anna Karenina

Not read Anna Karenina… perhaps a little long for the modern reader, but a wonderful work of literature.

Quote of the Day – David Marrs Rush

“The job is not done until all the tools are put away.” ~~ David Marrs Rush

I am sure this quote is not original with my father, but it was one of his favorite sayings.

The picture of him is from 1948 at Navy boot camp.  The uniforms were a bit different back then!  He would have been all of 17 years old in this photograph.  I am not sure of all of the story as to why and how he managed to join the military so young. He always said he grew five inches and put on 25 pounds in boot camp as it was the first time in his life he got three squares a day.  A bit of an exaggeration I am sure, but there is some truth in there.

Quote of the Day – Socrates

“True knowledge exists in knowing that you know nothing.” ~~ Socrates

For some reason Sargent Schultz of Hogan’s Heroes comes to mind…

People with overwhelming certainty about any number of things, scare the bejeebers our of me. I have very few things that I see as black or white.  Most things, for me, fall in the gray zone. I tend to see too many ‘ifs’, ‘ands’ and ‘buts’.
