Okeisms – Southernisms

I was more or less raised on the east coast.  But I also spent a lot of summers in Oklahoma.  Both my parents had rural, agrarian upbringings, one in Kentucky, land of beautiful horses and fast women, and the other in Oklahoma.  One of my siblings has described Oklahoma as southern and western, but definitely not southwestern. Under their cowboy hats, Okies definitely operate with a southern sensibility. For many years I was married to a highly educated woman who grew up in the boondocks of Arkansas.  She was buried so deep in the pine forests and mountains of rural Arkansas that the first black person she encountered was when she went away to college. She and her mishpocha had a very southern, rural way of speaking.  When we would go back to visit her parents, the closer to their home we were, the more country her speech became. The same phenomenon happened the further afield we ranged. Once we were on vacation in New England, and I had to frequently translate for her.  The Yankees up there were baffled by her accent, and she, not infrequently, by theirs.

So why I am I bringing this up? Continue reading “Okeisms – Southernisms    “

Grant Peeples – Insurrection Song (January 6th)

One more video of a song we heard performed at the Woodyfest in Okemah, OKGrant Peeples was a last minute replacement for an act that became sick.  His claim to fame is that he opened for Dan Berns one time at a famous venue in Atlanta, GA.  The singer-songwriter career path is a strange and frequently a not-for-profit journey.  But there does seem to be a lot of these troubadours out there, struggle though it may be.

Red State Blues by The Red Dirt Rangers

About the time I have completely written off Oklahoma as hopeless and a no man’s zone, I run across something gives me a glimmer of hope that all is not lost in my native state.

The Red Dirt Rangers are hugely popular in Oklahoma, especially around the Stillwater region.  It always amazes that bands like this are not bigger nationally.   We heard them perform this song Thursday night at the Woodyfest in Okemah, OK.

Crowds, Well Maybe…

Fire hydrant on The Hill

Saturday night, Señora and  I went to a party at a friend’s house who lives in The Hill district of St. Louis. This friend shares the same first name with Señora which occasionally gets confusing.  We socialize with another couple and the man shares a first name with me.  People tend to say Cathy’s David or Robin’s David.  Just to set the picture a little clearer, all of the folks at this party were retired, and if not they were getting close.  If you had been in your late 50s you would have been a youngster there.

If you are not familiar with St. Louis you might not know about The Hill.  In less politically correct times Continue reading “Crowds, Well Maybe…”

Rev. Joe’s Random Thought #9,989

yeah I know you did not ask!

I was reading a post on Nextdoor that was a bit of a rant, and from the poster’s comments it sounded like they lived in an apartment complex a mile or so from our house.  It is a nice complex. I checked it out first time I lived here, but decided that was more money than I wanted to give someone in a rent check every month.  It does seem to stay full though.

Apparently, the poster has a new neighbor, a new neighbor with a Great Dane. Apparently when this new neighbor walks this Great Dane, they do not pick up after their giant of a dog, effectively leaving massive poop bombs all over the place.

And living in an apartment with a Great Dane…

You just think you have problems.

Supernumerary

Señora and I spent the Fourth of July day floating in the pool of some friends and munching between dips. As people are wont to do under these pleasant circumstances, aided by the benumbing influence of a warm sun and cold libations to the deity of summer, our conversation ranged over a wide range of topics.  Basically anything that popped into our minds. Ms. Sikeston related a story about a male relative that had 3 nipples.  For obvious reasons, he was somewhat embarrassed to go to the beach.

I then began to harp on a pet peeve of mine. There are at least two movies I know of with characters with extra nipples/breasts. Continue reading “Supernumerary”

After The Goldrush Live – Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt

Again after this horrible, horrible week in our nation’s history I need some lightness. Three national treasures singing one of my favorite Neil Young songs. If I had a shrine in my abode, Dolly would be there, right next to Buddha.

The Story Behind The Song: Neil Young – After The Gold Rush

Dolly did clean it up a bit, replacing the line about getting high…
