Quote of the Day – Heather Cox Richardson

As I try to cover the news tonight, I am struck by how completely the Republican Party, which began in the 1850s as a noble endeavor to keep the United States government intact and to rebuild it to work for ordinary people, has devolved into a group of chaos agents feeding voters a fantasy world.” ~~ Heather Cox Richardson from Letters from an American

Normally I let the quotes speak for themselves, but I feel a few comments are in order. Heather Cox Richardson is a Continue reading “Quote of the Day – Heather Cox Richardson”

Quote of the Day – Stephen Chbosky

It’s much easier not to know things sometimes.” ~~ Stephen Chbosky

Or as a fellow I know once said to me, “If you just went through life keeping blinders on, you would be happier.”

Quote of the Day – David Marrs Rush

“The job is not done until all the tools are put away.” ~~ David Marrs Rush

I am sure this quote is not original with my father, but it was one of his favorite sayings.

The picture of him is from 1948 at Navy boot camp.  The uniforms were a bit different back then!  He would have been all of 17 years old in this photograph.  I am not sure of all of the story as to why and how he managed to join the military so young. He always said he grew five inches and put on 25 pounds in boot camp as it was the first time in his life he got three squares a day.  A bit of an exaggeration I am sure, but there is some truth in there.

Quote of the Day – Socrates

“True knowledge exists in knowing that you know nothing.” ~~ Socrates

For some reason Sargent Schultz of Hogan’s Heroes comes to mind…

People with overwhelming certainty about any number of things, scare the bejeebers our of me. I have very few things that I see as black or white.  Most things, for me, fall in the gray zone. I tend to see too many ‘ifs’, ‘ands’ and ‘buts’.

Quote of the Day – Mark Twain

But the truth is, that when a Library expels a book of mine and leaves an unexpurgated Bible lying around where unprotected youth and age can get hold of it, the deep unconscious irony of it delights me and doesn’t anger me.” ~~ Mark Twain in a  letter to Mrs. F. G. Whitmore, 7 February 1907

This was prompted by the removal of his book Adventures of Huckleberry Finn from the shelves of the children section of the Brooklyn Library – as I recall the story.  It might have been a different library, as it was banned from many.  The Brooklyn Library took issue with the use of sweat instead of perspire and from Huck itching and scratching all the time. Okay…

Quote of the Day – King Solomon

“For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.”  ~~ King Solomon in  Ecclesiastes 1:18

While attributed to King Solomon the actual author is unknown. The language in Ecclesiastes points to a time much later than Solomon would have lived.
