Three Thomas Jefferson Quotes Needed Today

Here are three quotes from Thomas Jefferson that are much needed in today’s noxious political climate.

“I never considered a difference of opinion in politics, in religion, in philosophy, as cause for withdrawing from a friend.” – Thomas Jefferson to William Hamilton, April 22, 18001

“When I hear another express an opinion, which is not mine, I say to myself, He has a right to his opinion, as I to mine; why should I question it. His error does me no injury, and shall I become a Don Quixote to bring all men by force of argument, to one opinion? If a fact be misstated, it is probable he is gratified by a belief of it, and I have no right to deprive him of the gratification. If he wants information he will ask it, and then I will give it in measured terms; but if he still believes his own story, and shows a desire to dispute the fact with me, I hear him and say nothing. It is his affair, not mine, if he prefers error. ”

further on in that same letter:

“. . . Be a listener only, keep within yourself, and endeavor to establish with yourself the habit of silence, especially on politics. In the fevered state of our country, no good can ever result from any attempt to set one of these fiery zealots to rights, either in fact or principle. . . . Get by them, therefore, as you would by an angry bull; it is not for a man of sense to dispute the road with such an animal. You will be more exposed than others to have these animals shaking their horns at you, because of the relation in which you stand with me.”

– Thomas Jefferson to his grandson Thomas Jefferson Randolph Washington, Nov. 24th, 1808

How To Move To Canada (If Trump Becomes President)

I will have to admit that more than once I have threaten to move to Canada if Trump were to be elected. Alternatively, I have considered taking my social security and pension checks and moving somewhere in Latin America. What A strange, strange pass we have come to in this country… A Canadian friend sent this to me. Do you think she is trying to tell me something?  Instead of Yankee Go Home, is it Yankee Do Not Come?

I Had to Walk Away

I had just got done golfing Friday and went into the club house to get my post round trumpBudweiser. On the TV, the news was blowing up with latest Donald Trump atrocity.  Which one?  They one where he got caught on tape bragging about assaulting women sexually.

The gentleman behind the counter was a fellow my age.  We have had several nice conversations together.  They are however, generally of the innocuous nature of small talk involving cars, golf or the Cardinals.

After watching the TV for a couple minutes I made the comment, Continue reading “I Had to Walk Away”

2016 – Not the Time To Vote For A 3rd Party Presidential Candidate

There is a pretty good argument to be made that the reason George W. Bush defeated Al Gore in 2000 is due the votes the Ralph Nader garnered.  Undoubtedly most of those votes would have gone for Gore. Also undoubtedly a Gore presidency would have been head and shoulders above the cluster that was the Bush Presidency.  The world and our country would have been in a much better place than what has been left to us by Bush-Cheney disaster.

I understand folk’s disenchantment with both the major parties, Democrats and Republicans.  I do not know if it is still common, but in years past in some states when you registered to vote you had to declare party affiliation.  I usually registered as an independent which in many ways disenfranchised me. And this man wants to be my President…

Actual Donald Trump sentence.  And this man believes he is qualified to President of these here United States of America.  Sigh…

“Look, having nuclear—my uncle was a great professor and scientist  and engineer, Dr. John Trump at MIT; good genes, very good genes, OK, very smart, the Wharton School of Finance, very good, very smart —you know, if you’re a conservative Republican, if I were a liberal, if, like, OK, if I ran as a liberal Democrat, they would say I’m one of the
smartest people anywhere in the world—it’s true!—but when you’re a conservative Republican they try—oh, do they do a number—that’s why I always start off: Went to Continue reading “And this man wants to be my President…”

They Almost Had It Right

I was walking through one of big box stores that dominant the American retail landscape.  TrumpHeaded towards the checkout was white male in the 3oish… 40ish age bracket.  He had on a t-shirt the front of which read,”DONALD FUCKIN’ TRUMP’.  The back read,”IF YOU DON’T BLEED RED, WHITE & BLUE, TAKE YOUR BITCHIN’ ASS HOME”

I started to say something to this individual, then  reminded myself that you cannot argue with stupid.

I’m not a prude, but wearing a t-shirt with profanity on it is a line no one should cross.  Continue reading “They Almost Had It Right”
