If somehow I were magically to become God, the first thing I would do is to get rid of all religions.

Three Thomas Jefferson Quotes Needed Today

Here are three quotes from Thomas Jefferson that are much needed in today’s noxious political climate.

“I never considered a difference of opinion in politics, in religion, in philosophy, as cause for withdrawing from a friend.” – Thomas Jefferson to William Hamilton, April 22, 18001

“When I hear another express an opinion, which is not mine, I say to myself, He has a right to his opinion, as I to mine; why should I question it. His error does me no injury, and shall I become a Don Quixote to bring all men by force of argument, to one opinion? If a fact be misstated, it is probable he is gratified by a belief of it, and I have no right to deprive him of the gratification. If he wants information he will ask it, and then I will give it in measured terms; but if he still believes his own story, and shows a desire to dispute the fact with me, I hear him and say nothing. It is his affair, not mine, if he prefers error. ”

further on in that same letter:

“. . . Be a listener only, keep within yourself, and endeavor to establish with yourself the habit of silence, especially on politics. In the fevered state of our country, no good can ever result from any attempt to set one of these fiery zealots to rights, either in fact or principle. . . . Get by them, therefore, as you would by an angry bull; it is not for a man of sense to dispute the road with such an animal. You will be more exposed than others to have these animals shaking their horns at you, because of the relation in which you stand with me.”

– Thomas Jefferson to his grandson Thomas Jefferson Randolph Washington, Nov. 24th, 1808

Me Too

met_square_stlI work in the Metropolitan Building in downtown St. Louis.  The Metropolitan is the tallest building in St. Louis and the second tallest in Missouri.    It is 42 stories tall in the tower section of the building.  It is listed as 593 feet.  The next tallest building in St. Louis is the AT&T Center at 588 feet.  For comparison the St. Louis Arch is 630 feet.  I once rappelled from 150 meters (492 feet) which is a pretty good drop.  I do not work at such lofty heights, but I am on the 7th floor of the non-tower portion of the structure.  My cube is right next to the outside walls and thus the large glass windows of the skyscraper.

Once year they clean all the windows on the outside.  For part of the building they use the stereotypical platform hung from two points.  On my portion of the building the window washers strap on what looks like a Continue reading “Me Too”

How To Move To Canada (If Trump Becomes President)

I will have to admit that more than once I have threaten to move to Canada if Trump were to be elected. Alternatively, I have considered taking my social security and pension checks and moving somewhere in Latin America. What A strange, strange pass we have come to in this country… A Canadian friend sent this to me. Do you think she is trying to tell me something?  Instead of Yankee Go Home, is it Yankee Do Not Come?

I saw a yard sign that read, “To stop violence, try prayer.”  I thought to myself if pray worked  (or worked like that) this world would have been an utopia centuries ago.

I Had to Walk Away

I had just got done golfing Friday and went into the club house to get my post round trumpBudweiser. On the TV, the news was blowing up with latest Donald Trump atrocity.  Which one?  They one where he got caught on tape bragging about assaulting women sexually.

The gentleman behind the counter was a fellow my age.  We have had several nice conversations together.  They are however, generally of the innocuous nature of small talk involving cars, golf or the Cardinals.

After watching the TV for a couple minutes I made the comment, Continue reading “I Had to Walk Away”

Boys Will Be Boys

golf-cartI generally work a half day on Fridays which allows me to go golfing in the afternoon if the weather is nice.  At the course I generally go to, they have a senior scramble Friday mornings.  When I say senior,  I mean most of the guys appear to be in their 60s and 70s. They are generally in the club house when I get there between 1 and 2.  They are going over the standings, prizes, etc. If not that they are in the parking lot unloading their golf carts.

I check in, and go to the first tee.  As I am warming up I hear all this racket, gravel spewing, old men laughing hysterically  and cheering.  I look through the woods to the graveled parking lot to discover that they are having golf cart drag races.

Of course, at this point in the round, more than a few Budweiser have had their tops popped.  However, boys will be boys no matter their age.

I’m flipping through the channels and got stuck for a moment on the Rachel Maddox show.  They were showing a Trump rally somewhere.  There was a “gentleman” carrying a hand lettered sign that read, “Better to grab a P*&%y than to be one.

First at that point why are you bothering with masking the word pussy.  You have already stepped over the line.  Secondly, my thought was, “Hillary was right, many of the Trump supporters are deplorable.”

Somehow or another, one of my email addresses has become known to the spammers.  I am getting several emails a day that read something like this, “Guys do you want to do it 3, 4, 5 or even 6 times a night…”

First of all in my prime I would have been lucky to do it 3 times a night, let alone 4, 5 or 6 times.  Secondly, I could see a couch in my future if tried to wake up my wife up for  whatever it is they think I could do 3, 4, 5 or even 6 times in one night.
