Happy Birthday to You

Saturday night Señora and I went to dinner with two other couples.  For our outing the group chose Lu Lu Seafood & Dim Sum, a Chinese restaurant.  To call Lu Lu’s a Chinese restaurant — given the American perception of what a Chinese restaurant is – smacks of comparing Mexican high cuisine to Taco Bell. It very definitely is not the Tex-Mex of Chinese food.

St. Louis has an older area that is more or less informally known as Chinatown.  There are many Chinese restaurants, supermarkets and other Chinese ran businesses in this area. Much of the Chinese population lives nearby.  I looked it up, and the demographers put the St. Louis Chinese population at around 13,000. I thought it was much larger than that.  For comparison those same demographers put Continue reading “Happy Birthday to You”

Quote of the Day — Robert A. Heinlein

“… I began to sense faintly that secrecy is the keystone of all tyranny. Not force, but secrecy . . . censorship. When any government, or any church for that matter, undertakes to say to its subjects, “This you may not read, this you must not see, this you are forbidden to know,” the end result is tyranny and oppression, no matter how holy the motives. Mighty little force is needed to control a man whose mind has been hoodwinked; contrariwise, no amount of force can control a free man, a man whose mind is free.” “ Robert A. Heinlein in Revolt in 2100

Soy americana, también

I have been working with a young Ecuadorian lady, Micaela, for years for Spanish conversation practice via Skype. She is interesting, curious, and intelligent. I pay for an hour of her time on iTalki, but we frequently find ourselves still conversing 10, 15 and on occasion 20 minutes after our allotted time, if she does not have a class backed up against mine.  She does have one trait that reminds me of my son.  She frequently plays Devil’s Advocate to whatever I say.  Sometimes I think this is just her personality, but I sometimes think it is her method of keeping the conversation going.  I have mentioned Devil’s Advocate Micaela in previous posts.

Awhile back we were having a conversation of which I do not remember the theme.  For some reason I made the comment Continue reading “Soy americana, también”

Matrimonial Log – Star Date 5785.055

“Matrimony… the final frontier. These are the voyages of the Starship Casamiento Segundo, its until-death-do-us-part mission… to explore a strange new relationship… to seek out a new life and new adventures… to boldly go where no sane couple has gone before.”

I went downstairs this morning and said to Señora, “What about fixing me some eggs for breakfast?”

She replied, “Are your arms broken?  I know you know where the skillet is.  You put it up last night after you washed the dishes.”

She went on to add, “Besides who do you think you are, the King of England, wanting eggs for breakfast. We’re not jet setters around here who can afford such luxuries.”

All of which reminded me of a story about my daughter from when she was in 5th grade:   $40 A$$

I Cried Myself to Sleep

Okay, this most likely will only be of interest to family members… if anyone at all. I am not quite sure why I got to thinking about this.

We moved to Italy in 1964 for a stay of a little over three years.  My father would have been 33 and my mother 30, turning 31 in September of that year.  I don’t know about you, but in my early 30s I still had a lot of growing up to do, but then again, I took a long time to mature.  I am not sure I am there yet, and I hear my second childhood knocking (down?) on the door.

I would have just turned the ripe old age of 12 when we moved there.  My father had already been there for two or three months, and he had an Continue reading “I Cried Myself to Sleep”

Word of the Day – Doge

Word of the Day… not actually daily, but whenever I encounter one I think worth sharing and there are not too many on my landing page.  Words have always fascinated me, and I am a fan of all types of word play, especially puns.  I have a hard time not looking up a word that I am unfamiliar with or not sure of the definition. I like those authors that stretch me by throwing in unexpected terms.

  • Noun: Doge
    1. the chief magistrate in the former republics of Venice and Genoa.
  • Synonyms:
    1. prime minister
    2. leader
    3. premier
    4. chancellor
    5. PM
    6. President
    7. head of government
    8. head of state
    9. chief of state
    10. commander in chief
    11. chief minister
    12. first minister
    13. chief executive
    14. head of the government
    15. ruler
  • Usage:
    1. The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), officially the U.S. DOGE Service Temporary Organization, is an initiative of the second tAss administration informally led by that POS Elon Musk
  • Encountered:
    1.  Okay, this has been niggling at the back of my mind for a while, so I finally looked it up.  I knew I had read this word somewhere, history being one of my prime non-occupational interest.  I am sure the POS that is Elon Musk (who probably dreamed up this name) is well aware of the double entendre. I doubt tAss has a inkling as it is doubtful he reads beyond the fifth grade level. I am clueless as to why this man is part of the government except, as impossible as it seems, tAss is the  biggest whore in his circle, a circle full of the worst possible excuses for Homo sapiens imaginable. I sometimes think that they must be blackmailing El puto pendejo naranja, except he has no shame.

I just need to get me some more gummies and go back to ignoring the demise of my once beloved country, to pretending this is really not happening.

Rest In Peace -United States of America

Rest In Peace
United States of America
July 4, 1776 – January 20, 2025
“Even God could not save her from the religious.”

There needs to be some serious soul searching amongst the denizens of this country.  There was no sane, moral or ethical reason for having voted for the chimera that is DJT, especially this time around, as his psychopathy had been on full display for years.

If you voted for him because your religion is preaching an Armageddon / Second Coming of Christ fantasy, and he is the the agent that God will use to fulfill those end days delusions, you need to apply critical thinking skills to what they are  spewing from the pulpits and to religion in general.  But then again, it seems to me, the only way for people to be religious is to forego thinking critically about it.  With the Evangelicals embracing DJT as they have, faith has become a four letter word in my book.

God save us from the religious.

For the first time in my life I am truly afraid, afraid of future, afraid of what this country is becoming, afraid of many of my fellow citizens, afraid of what DJT and his ilk are going to do to this world. The only bright spot I can see in this cluster f*** is that I will not be around much longer to witness it.

Quote of the Day – Oscar Wilde

  1. Quote of the Day… not actually daily, but whenever I encounter one I think worth sharing and there are not too many in sequence. I like quotes as they frequently distill a piece of wisdom into a brief passage, or make other points very succinctly – such as the witticisms of Oscar Wilde.

“I think that God in creating Man somewhat overestimated his ability”.  ~~ Oscar Wilde

I don’t generally put out two postings a day, but I stumbled across this quote I had queued up and I could not resist.

Heaven forbid I should question such a wordsmith as Oscar Wilde so I am assuming the ambiguity is intentional. Did God overestimate his own ability  or that of Man?

Quote of the Day – Thomas More

“Plato by a goodly similitude declareth, why wise men refrain to meddle in the commonwealth. For when they see the people swarm into the streets, and daily wet to the skin with rain, and yet cannot persuade them to go out of the rain, they do keep themselves within their houses, seeing they cannot remedy the folly of the people.” ~~ Thomas More
